Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard and Spotlight producer Anonymous Content are teaming to produce a timely TV series based on Kate Andersen Brower’s bestseller First Women: The Grace & Power Of America’s Modern First Ladies. It will be directed and executive produced Robin Wright, who plays a First Lady on TV on Netflix’s House Of Cards.
The book, published April 12 by HarperCollins, is described as an intimate, news-making look at the true modern power brokers at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: the First Ladies, from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama. Wright, who won a Golden Globe for her role as FLOTUS Claire Underwood on House Of Cards, is attached to direct the pilot. She executive produces, along with Pacific Standard’s Witherspoon, Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar, and Bruna Papandrea. Anonymous Content’s Ashley Zalta and Doreen Wilcox-Little are co-executive producers.

One of the coolest shots in the trailer is a slow-motion sequence of Robin Wright’s General Antiope shooting two arrows at the enemy. In the comics, she is the sister to Hippolyta and Diana’s aunt. She’s clearly fighting military soldiers from the war, meaning that perhaps Themyscira will get drawn into the broader conflict of World War I at some point in the film. Either way, she’s leading the charge on the Amazonian side.

The first project from new nonprofit We Do It Together, the movie will consist of seven short films, each directed by a woman and starring a prominent actress.
Robin Wright, Catherine Hardwicke, Freida Pinto and Juliette Binoche are joining forces for a new omnibus film Together Now, to be produced by the nonprofit production company We Do It Together. The company’s first feature, Together Now, will be comprised of seven short films, each of which will pair a woman director with a prominent actress to tell what producers promise will be an inspiring story. The directors who have come on board include Wright, Hardwicke, Katia Lund (All the Invisible Children), Patricia Riggen (The 33), Haifaa Al Mansour (Wadjda), Malgorzata Szumowska (Elles) and Melina Matsoukas (Beyonce’s Formation). Pinto and Binoche are among the actresses who will appear onscreen.
Let’s just come right out and say it: Wright won House of Cards‘ fourth season by a veritable landslide. Her steely first lady stole the show early on as Claire went toe-to-toe with husband Francis in an epic battle of intellect and hubris, and Wright had us rooting for her FLOTUS every step of the way. (Not that she needed our support — she had the situation more than handled.)
While that marital battle raged, Claire was fighting a war on another front — with her disapproving (and cancer-stricken) mom Elizabeth (played to acid-tongued perfection by Ellen Burstyn). The pair’s painful history yielded one blockbuster scene after another, and allowed Wright to show us Claire at her most vulnerable. And this was particularly the case in the Wright-directed “Chapter 49,” which found Claire in the position of having to end the life of the woman she alternately loathed and loved.

Robin Wright has directed four of this season’s episodes, double the number she did last season. It’s tempting to draw a parallel between her increased creative contributions behind the scenes and Claire’s prominence as a character this year, especially given the events of “Chapter 49,” Wright’s most accomplished directing job yet. Claire has to navigate some tricky emotional territory in this episode, and as both actor and director, Wright is up to the task.
